Lenovo Ideapad Y510p Review

Design
Like its predecessor, the IdeaPad Y500, The IdeaPad Y510 features a brushed black aluminum lid and deck with a subtle horizontal striping pattern. An embossed Lenovo logo in the upper right corner of the lid adds a small amount of flair to an otherwise unadorned exterior. Similarly, the red-tinted keys and speakers liven up the notebook's melanistic design. The Y510p features black-and-red JBL speakers in slight indentations in the upper left and right corners. samsung galaxy tab 2 charger
The clickpad rests slightly off-center below the G and H keys, and the spacious deck provides plenty of room on which to rest your wrists. However, the edge of the deck is quite sharp, which makes typing for long periods somewhat uncomfortable.
The keyboard is visually engaging, with black keys ringed in red and backlit for an aggressive look, day or night. The AccuType chiclet keyboard has ever-so-slightly sculpted keycaps, and the sides of each keycap are bright red, casting a wicked glow whenever the backlight is engaged. {samsung r60 plus power supply|samsung r60 charger} The touchpad below is actually a clickpad, which isn't the best option for a gaming machine—with the buttons integrated into the clickable touch sensor, you may find your attempts to use the touchpad in-game to be frustrating.

Features
The IdeaPad Y510 also features Ultrabay, a modular expansion system in which the optical drive is replaced with a bay can be equipped with one of four modular upgrades: a DVD drive, a second hard drive, a cooling fan, or (as seen in our review unit) a second graphics card.Alongside the Ultrabay is a lock slot, one always-on USB 2.0 port, and jacks for headphone and microphone. On the left you'll find a Gigabit Ethernet port, Lenovo's OneKey recovery button, VGA and HDMI outputs, and two USB 3.0 ports. On the front edge of the laptop chassis is a 6-in-1 card reader (SD, SDHC, SDXC, MMC, MS, MS-Pro), and inside is an Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230 for 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 for wireless networking and peripheral connectivity. The IdeaPad Y510 also boasts a 1TB hard drive and 24GB solid-state cache, providing storage space for your game library and media collection, but still offering the fast boot times and nimble responsiveness of a solid-state drive. {samsung galaxy s5 car charger|samsung galaxy s5} Our review unit had no optical drive, but there is a DVD-drive option for the Ultrabay slot. The one drawback of buying a gaming rig from a major retailer is the amount of trialware and bloatware that comes preinstalled on it. Lenovo throws in several preinstalled apps and programs, with a 30-day trial of McAfee Internet Security, a 30-day trial of Microsoft Office 365, along with Amazon Kindle Reader, Rara Music, Evernote, Skype, and Lenovo Cloud Storage (with SugarSync). Lenovo covers the IdeaPad Y510p with a one-year warranty.

Case
Even though the chassis design of the IdeaPad Y500 was not without its flaws, Lenovo decided not to update it - we could not detect any changes aside from the non-glare display. Since the chassis is a carry-over, the new model inherits all of its strengths and weaknesses. There are plenty of slimmer and/or lighter multimedia notebooks on the market, but we have to applaud Lenovo for keeping the dimensions in check: not all competing manufacturers would be able to integrate two graphics cards in a chassis that measures 387 x 259 x 39 millimeters (~15.2 x 10.2 x 1.5 inches). We are happy to overlook the rather substantial weight of 2.9 kilograms (~6.4 pounds) since the notebook includes an UltraBay - a swappable drive bay, which can be equipped with a secondary GPU, a fan, a hard drive, or an optical drive. {asus transformer book t100 t100ta power adapter charger|asus transformer book t100ta dk005h|asus t100ta power adapter}One of our main points of criticism concerns the materials Lenovo uses: the dark surfaces attract dirt - especially the extremely delicate high-gloss display bezel. The unit is also not very sturdy and the touchpad flexes way too much. For details about the chassis, please read our review of the IdeaPad Y500.

Performance
The IdeaPad Y510 uses the same 2.2GHz Intel Core i7-4702MQ quad-core processor found in the MSI GE40 2OC-009US, but pairs it with 16GB of RAM instead of the 8GB MSI offered. It offers solid performance for non-gaming tasks, completing PCMark 7 with 4,898 points and completing Photoshop in a respectable 4 minutes 43 seconds. But despite the similarities in hardware and the larger allocation of RAM,The IdeaPad Y510P actually lags a bit behind the MSI GE40 2OC-009US, which scored better in PCMark 7 (5,339 points) and was faster in Photoshop (4:01).The Y510p is equipped with an Intel Core i7-4700MQ. This particular CPU features clock speeds from 2.4-3.4 GHz - same as the previous-generation Core i7-3630QM, which Lenovo used in the predecessor Y510. In addition to the identical clock speeds, the amount of L3 cache (six MB) and the manufacturing process (22 nm) are the same for both processors. One of the most significant improvements of Intel's Haswell architecture affects the graphics card: the HD Graphics 4600 offers quite a bit more performance than the older HD Graphics 4000 (Ivy Bridge generation). Too bad that Lenovo hp envy 23 touchsmart power supply
does not use graphics switching because of the dual-GPU configuration - Nvidia's Optimus technology would have saved a lot of power during idle and while running less demanding applications. The CPU features a TDP of 47 Watts, can address eight threads in parallel via Hyperthreading, and supports Turbo Boost.

Conclusion
The IdeaPad Y510P suffers from being a very good gaming laptop in a crowded category where it is not the very best. Despite this, it's a well-built gaming rig, and it will play even demanding high-end games without so much as a stutter. While the Editors' Choice MSI GX60 1AC-021US remains our top pick due to its longer battery life and affordability, {nexus 7 charger|nexus 7 2013 battery|google nexus 7 charger|nexus 7 2013 charger|asus nexus 7 charger} the IdeaPad Y510p is a good machine, and worth looking at if you want gaming prowess combined with Lenovo's reliability.
