ASUS ROG G751 review

Design and features

The G751 shaves a bit of bulk off of some previous gaming laptops from Asus' Republic of Gamers collection of high-end machines, but not enough to compete with a new, slim gaming laptop aesthetic being pushed by companies such as Razer and MSI. Right now, there's a call to be made between having a thin, ultrabook-like body, and having the latest components. In this case, Asus goes for performance over style. If you do want to trade down to a smaller gaming laptop with a more modern design, samsung galaxy s4 usb cable such as the Razer Blade or the upcoming HP Omen, you're looking at an Nvidia GeForce 860M as the graphics card, which is fine for casual gaming, but not what someone looking to play games at high detail settings at 1080p or with medium settings at 4K, will need. The chassis of the G751 rises in the back, tapering towards the front, giving you the illusion of a slimmer laptop when viewed from the correct angle. Decoration is thankfully minimal, but the matte-black lid is half covered by a brushed metal plate that transitions into the single wide hinge joint and is accented by a chrome Asus logo and the red backlit logo for the company's gaming line, asus t100 power cord an inexplicably arched eyebrow. The base of the system is so large that the screen is inset by a few inches, leaving a hefty lip protruding from the rear when the laptop is open. That rear area houses two giant fan vents, painted red, so you can't miss them. If you can't hide the giant vents, you might as well accentuate them, the thinking might have gone.Inside the matte-black interior is a backlit keyboard that feels well-tuned for gaming. The all-important WASD keys get highlighted with red key shafts, a subtle effect that you only really notice when not sitting on top of it. The keys have a deep, satisfying click, and the space bar bows out slightly on the left side, presumably to make it easier to hit with your left hand while gaming.A handful of quick-launch and custom-programmed buttons sit above the keyboard on the left side. One has the familiar logo of Steam, the PC game distribution platform. samsung note 3 power cord Hit the button, and Steam automatically launches (if installed), but in its Big Picture Mode view, designed for living-room use. A button next to it with the logo of a video camera, launches Nvidia's Experience software package and the ShadowPlay feature built into that, allowing you to record or stream gameplay, much as one might on a service such as Twitch. Also included is a software app called the Acer Gaming Center. It lists available storage space and allows for profiles with custom macros or screen or audio presets. It also, oddly, throws in the local time and weather. The Asus arched eyebrow logo is half-hidden on a single key near the top of the number pad -- that's the launch button for the Gaming Center software app.

Keyboard and trackpad

The keyboard on the G751 is a refinement of what we’ve seen on other G series laptops in the past. The layout is spacious, the entire keyboard is illuminated (red backlight, with 3 intensity levels) and the keys’ travel, toshiba z830 batteries online feedback and finishing is adequate for a high end notebook. There’s a NumPad area on the right and the arrow keys are nicely separated from all the others. The WASD keys pop out, thanks to their visible red border and the slight lump on the W key, which lets you find it easier without looking. And on top of that, the Space key is wider towards its left side, thus more comfortable to hit with your thumb. But not everything is golden with this keyboard though and there are at least two aspects I believe Asus should have designed better. Number one, the NumLock key has been replaced with an Asus GameCenter key, 0957 2304 which launches a metro-style app that allows you to check out the amount of available storage or RAM and easily launch the Splendid or AudioWizard utilities, among other things. It also allows to create custom profiles for various use scenarios, if you want to. But the thing is, you’ll hardly ever use these and the GameCenter surely did not require a dedicated key, especially when it replaces another that people actually use.My other nit is with the set of 5 macro keys in the top right corner. There’s one that launches ShadowPlay, one that launches Steam and three customizable macro keys that you can set up to do various things in games or in Windows. asus tx300 charger The latter could prove useful, but I ended up hitting that ShadowPlay key often when reaching for Escape, which I’d reckon is a major problem for someone who’s recording or streaming their gameplay. Annoying, to say the least.Anyway, let’s turn our attention to the trackpad, which is one of the best I’ve ever seen. Its surface is gigantic, smooth and accurate. lenovo z50 70 charger buy It’s not clickable, as you get actual mechanical click buttons beneath. But it did reply promptly to my single or two finger taps or my gestures. So long story short, this is the kind of trackpad I wish more manufacturers would put on their laptops. Too bad it probably won’t be used that much on this computer, as I’d reckon most buyers would have a gaming mouse connected most of the time anyway.

Display

At first glance, the G751JY’s 1080p display seems to be a run-of-the-mill screen. Picture quality doesn’t look particularly sharp, and colors aren’t vibrant. After we spent some more time with it, however, we came to appreciate the screen’s realistic look. It doesn’t grab the eyes, but good looking games like Battlefield 4 make its accurate color and strong contrast clearly obvious.
Objective testing indicates that the display can handle 93 percent of sRGB, and 71 percent of AdobeRGB. It also maintains a contrast ratio of 650:1. These results are middling.netzteil fur samsung np900x3e Competitors like the Alienware 17 offer a slightly wider gamut, but a lower contrast ratio. When we performed color accuracy tests, however, the G751JY blew everything else away with its average DeltaE of 2.02 (a value of 1 is the smallest difference the human eye can notice). The vast majority of the error was produced by cyan, which is a common weak point in LED displays. Other colors bordered on perfection. msi gp60 akku The Alienware 17 produced a far higher DeltaE of 7.9. A few systems, like Origin’s EON17-S, suffer with an average color difference above 10.The results are bolstered by the use of a semi-gloss display coat, and a backlight that can hit 334 lux. Combine these traits and you have a notebook that can be used anywhere. Want to game outside? Not a problem. The speakers are excellent too, barking out strong audio asus s200e european power adapter at maximum volume and pleasing, crisp sound at lower levels. Turning up the speakers to their highest setting isn’t necessary to enjoy them. You’ll be fine at half the G751JY’s peak volume in most situations.

Performance

For our objective benchmarks, we compared the Asus Republic of Gamers G751JY-DH71 to another GeForce GTX 980M rig now in the review pipeline, vgp ac10v10 adapter for vaio MSI's $2,999 GT72 Dominator Pro (it has the same CPU, but a four-drive RAID 0 boot array), as well as a pair of GTX 880M-based laptops, an Alienware 17 and Origin EON17-S (the latter reviewed by our sister site PCMag.com). And not to leave AMD out, we also included another Alienware 17 with Radeon R9 M290X graphics. The Asus started out looking strong in PCMark 8, a synthetic suite whose Work scenario assesses overall system performance for tasks such as word processing and spreadsheeting. The 2.5GHz Core i7-4710HQ sony vaio pro 13 battery pack Asus and MSI staged a photo finish in our CPU-crunching Cinebench test, which renders a complex image to show a PC's suitability for processor-intensive workloads, but the Origin with its 3.1GHz Core i7-4940MX Extreme Edition chip was well ahead.

Conclusion

The Asus ROG G751JY-DH71 retails at $2,500, and it’s the least expensive version available that also includes the Nvidia GeForce GTX 980M GPU. This price is competitive, but it’s not the knock-out value that has been offered by some previous Asus gaming notebooks. MSI, for example, offers the GT72, which is very similar, for $200 less.bose soundlink 2 charger That said, Asus has upped its game with the ROG G751JY-DH71. Its systems have always been solid, but this unit is among the best in its class. The Asus G751JY is attractive, well-built, powerful, and relatively quiet. It also offers an outstanding display, and strong speakers as well. If pressed to find a weakness, we’d have to say bulk, but it’s no heavier than average for this category.samsung galaxy note 10.1 chargerThe G751JY-DH71 we reviewed represents only one branch of two model lines. Asus also offers the G751JT, which boasts an identical design, and similar hardware, but has a GTX 970M in it instead of the GTX 980M. JT models start at $1,500. samsung np900x3a battery Asus has worked hard to position its Republic of Gamers line as a top-tier series, rather than another collection of budget rigs. The G751JY-DH71 completes this ascent to the big leagues, and is closer to perfection than any gaming notebook we’ve ever reviewed.
